Mental Health Awareness Day 2018

October 10 is Mental Health Awareness Day. We on the Outer Banks are lucky to be able to offer a place for our guests to come and unwind from their daily jobs, struggles, anxieties, and depression.

We have guests from all over the world who come to the Outer Banks for vacation but also to clear their mind and try to find meaning in their lives.

We’ve had guests who after a few days of staying at the beach, found meaning in life and went back to their families with a decision to fight depression.

We understand that not everybody can afford to come to the beach but you can be there in your imagination.

If you can’t calm down your mind, use a guided meditation that helps you get to “that Happy Place.”

First thing first, please know, that You ARE NOT Alone. There are 1 in 5 adults in America experience a mental illness. Nearly 1 in 25 (10 million) adults in America live with a serious mental illness.

If you’re not ready to talk to somebody. Here are a few tips that are known to help see the brighter light. There is light in the darkness.

The rays of the sun through the thick clouds

Close your eyes

Drop your shoulders

Drop the tongue in the middle of your mouth

Take 5 deep breaths through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

Hear the sounds around you, it could be cars, birds chirping, dogs barking

Open your eyes and look at one beautiful thing it could be a bird, a tree, a person, a dog, cat.

Feel your feet touching the ground.

Write down really fast what you’re experiencing

Put down the notebook

Go outside and walk.

You CAN do it!

Smell the air.

Take 5 deep breaths through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

Look at the sky

Think of all the great things that you have and be grateful.

Think of all the great things that happened to you and be grateful.

Do not focus on negative experiences.
